WoW Insider Show episode 91: The video show

We had our long-awaited video version of the podcast last weekend, and it was a hoot: Turpster and I dressed up and drank champagne together, Robin Torres showed how to inflate your Frostmourne, Lesley Smith came to us live from England, Duncor showed off his famous gigantic cowboy hat, and Patrick Beja showed that he can out-spiffy us any day. Unfortunately, because of the way we did things, we didn’t end up getting a good recording of the whole thing — you can see a few clips of the beginning over on Ustream, but they only have my camera (and the audio is rough — I didn’t realize it sounded that bad at the time). Dotorion also Frapsed a bit of the beginning, which should give you a little taste of the multi-camera mayhem. But in the end, it was pretty much a one-time thing you had to be there for live. Lightning in a bottle, if you will. The good news is that even if you didn’t see the show, we’ve still got a treat for you: Turpster premiered a brand new video (put together by our good friend Ninthbatter) that we played at the end of the show, and that you can watch online right now. Turpster has also recently updated his own site, where you

Ghostcrawler hints at another patch before patch 3.2

With many of the major features of patch 3.2 having been announced, and a lot of people already somewhat bored with patch 3.1 content, and with the new dungeon/raid instance being a relatively simple “arena” format, many have been hoping that we’ll see a 3.2 PTR soon. However, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer than hoped. In a recent post regarding adjustments to Druid set bonuses, Ghostcrawler let slip that a change would be coming “long before 3.2.” While it’s possible this could just be slipped in with other hotfixes, it does seem to imply that we can expect another bug fix and minor balance tweaking patch before 3.2 hits the servers. Of course, this is probably good news for those hoping for adjustments and fixes for their class or spec, but for those who just want more new stuff to do: Well, sorry, you may have to make those ulduar trips or Argent Tournament dailies last just a bit longer.

Totem Talk: Is Enhancement too squishy?

Yes, that’s Thoralius the Wise from the Howling Fjord starting quests. When I saw him get up and start zoning out to his smoke brazier, the look on his face just meshed too well with today’s subject matter, which is the health of shamans in melee. We talked about shaman health in PvP a while back, now it’s PvE’s turn. I don’t play my shaman in a melee role in raids right now, because I basically don’t have the gear for it. My resto set’s a lot better so that’s what I go as, but that only means I often notice how difficult it is to keep enhancement shamans on their feet. There are several possible culprits for the disparity, although in most cases I believe the killer to be aoe damage, so wearing mail really isn’t the issue: rogues aren’t nearly as hard to keep up as shamans, for instance, because rogues have cooldowns and abilities that allow them to avoid or escape damage. (If you’ve ever seen a rogue go sprinting through several mines on a Mimiron kill you’ll know what I mean.) No, excepting those giant whirlwinding maniacs in Razorscale and Thorim, what’s generally killing shamans in melee is AoE

Studying WoWcology, where psychology and WoW meet

I’ve been meaning to write about this WoWcology blog for a few days now, but there’s just so much there — reader Skeuk is guilded up with a PhD in Psychology, who’s writing not only about the guild’s day to day battles, but also about how the deeper tenets of psychology can be seen in our Azerothian gameplay. This post about group dynamics is extremely interesting — if you’ve ever suffered through some bad PuGs in your time, you can see the different stages of group development, and you can probably even figure out where your PuG fizzled out in the “storming” stage or made it all the way through to the “performing” part of the cycle. Fascinating stuff, for sure. Unfortunately, posts aren’t coming too often, and it seems like Dr. Amalea — who for some reason refers to himself in the third person at times — understandably has other things to do besides keeping a blog about World of Warcraft and psychology. But maybe if we send them a little traffic, we can convince him to keep it up regularly, as what’s there now makes for some really interesting reading. It’s really interesting that a

Wintergrasp disabled

We noted an error earlier this evening which was causing the Lake Wintergrasp PvP zone to be reset prematurely. Since ending epic battles early is a bad thing, Blizzard has gone ahead and “shut off Wintergrasp” completely for the time being. This is change is effecting all realms. There is no word when a fix will come through, but we’re hopeful it will happen sometime soon. Disabling an entire part of the game is a big thing, and an error that usually is correctly quickly. Some speculation points to the change in daily (now weekly) quests that just went in, however there is no evidence to support this.

[1.Local]: Questions, answers from our readers

Reader comments – ahh, yes, the juicy goodness following a meaty post. [1.Local] ducks past the swinging doors to see what readers have been chatting about in the back room over the past week. The comments section is usually a cacophony of voices seeking to agree or disagree with the main post, discredit previous commentors or make some pointless point (“first” — /facepalm). This week, readers pulled together in a more truly interactive relationship, offering up questions, tips, insights and well thought-out suggestions and ideas. Take a trip through the pickings this week on ways to make professions more interesting, more Star Trek Easter eggs, getting real about DPS, copyright issues, snappier headlines … and even a post devoted exclusively to guild and player recruitment notices. Assessing the gear-crafting trades BWJ seized the opportunity to present his vision for more robust professions in World of Warcraft. “God, where to start?” he began. “Professions really got the short end of the stick, in Wrath, with the exception of Jewelcrafting. I have a lot of alts and I make stuff for them leveling up, but most of the time I just

How to configure Grid

If you’re a raiding healer, chances are you use or at least have heard of Grid, the popular raid frame mod. It makes the essential task of staring at health bars significantly easier. However, Grid is a darn complicated mod. So complicated, in fact, that Llyra over at Healing Way has written a blog post all about how to configure it. I’ve been using Grid for years, ever since Molten Core (in fact, one of my first posts on WoW Insider was about Grid), and I still learned things from this article. The way Grid composites information onto its little squares is not intuitively obvious, so it’s probably worth taking a look just for that. There is also a video on how to configure the mod, which might give you a hint just how complex it can get. The post ends with a list of some useful plug-ins for Grid; I fully agree with the author that GridStatusThreat, which shows which raid members have aggro, is a must-have (although I can’t find a working link to it at the moment – is it included with Grid these days?).
